At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a young shepherd. His life was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the lone tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day in day, guarding his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plot.
Stories of predators hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills to help read more but found no beast.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game persisted for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
